The Electronic Impact Group

The Electronic Impact Group welcomes researchers, practitioners, and industry professionals - from DJs and venue operators to policymakers and performers - to explore how research can inform, sustain, and reimagine nightlife culture. We aim to disseminate and leverage research, share knowledge, co-create research projects and discuss ideas that strengthen the nightlife industry and the communities it supports.

Our Story

Hi, I'm James Cannon, a postgraduate researcher in Music Psychology at the University of Leeds, UK, with a background in both participating in and researching electronic dance music culture.

I set up the Electronic Impact Group following the publication of a collaborative report, Dance Music’s Impact on Communities and Culture, which I led during my time as a Visiting Research Assistant at the University of Leeds. The report was produced with colleagues Alinka Greasley, Alice O’Grady, and Tony Rigg, and supported by David Boyle (Audience Strategies). We were fortunate to have the backing of the AFEM and NTIA in publicising the report.

Since then, we have continued to engage with the NTIA and other nightlife industry bodies, including presenting research at the annual Night Time Economy Summit. Our goal is to get research into the hands of those who can use it to support the industry and to develop meaningful opportunities for academic–industry collaboration.
